As part of its mission to expand access to quality healthcare and improve lives through international medical outreach, Impact Changing Outcomes (ICO) organized a week-long orthopedic medical mission at Mount Mary Hospital in Buea, Cameroon, from January 29 to February 3, 2024. The initiative brought together leading orthopedic specialists from the United States to provide expert consultations, perform complex surgical procedures, and strengthen local healthcare delivery.
The medical mission was led by Dr. Apollinaris Mbah, Founder and President of Impact Changing Outcomes, alongside renowned U.S. orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Wessel. Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the staff and patients of Mount Mary Hospital, where they were received by Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi, proprietor of the hospital.
Reflecting Mount Mary Hospital’s holistic approach to healthcare, the medical team joined hospital staff and patients for the institution’s daily morning prayer before beginning clinical activities. The moment symbolized the shared belief that exceptional medical care and spiritual support work hand in hand to promote healing, hope, and human dignity.
Throughout the week, Dr. Mbah and Dr. Wessel conducted specialist consultations and performed advanced orthopedic procedures for patients suffering from a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. The mission addressed complex bone fractures, joint disorders, congenital deformities, and other orthopedic conditions that often require specialized expertise unavailable to many patients in the region. Their interventions restored mobility, relieved pain, and significantly improved patients’ quality of life.
Beyond direct patient care, the mission fostered collaboration with local healthcare professionals through the exchange of knowledge, clinical experience, and best practices. By working alongside the hospital’s medical team, the visiting specialists contributed to strengthening local capacity and supporting the long-term development of orthopedic services within the community.
