Impact Changing Outcomes Leads Strategic U.S. Medical Mission to Strengthen Rehabilitation Services at ARCH Buea

As part of its commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare through international collaboration, Impact Changing Outcomes (ICO) led a high-level medical mission to the Associated Rehabilitation Centre for the Handicapped (ARCH) Francescana Complex in Mile 14, Buea, Cameroon, on February 1, 2024. The visit formed part of the organization’s broader mission to improve rehabilitation services and foster sustainable partnerships that enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

The delegation was led by Dr. Apollinaris Mbah, Founder and President of Impact Changing Outcomes, alongside renowned U.S. orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Wessel. They were accompanied by Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi, Bishop of the Diocese of Buea, and Dr. Innocent Bibi during the comprehensive assessment of the rehabilitation center.

The visit began with a guided tour of ARCH’s specialized physiotherapy units, where the delegation met with the executive administration and clinical staff. Dr. Mbah and Dr. Wessel observed the rehabilitation programs designed to restore mobility, improve functional independence, and enhance the quality of life for patients recovering from traumatic injuries, congenital conditions, neurological disorders, and other physical disabilities. The team also evaluated the center’s physiotherapy equipment and rehabilitation facilities, discussing opportunities to strengthen services through technical expertise, training, and future resource support.

A major highlight of the mission was the inspection of ARCH’s orthopedic workshop, where customized assistive devices—including tricycles, prosthetic and orthotic appliances, and specialized orthopedic footwear—are designed and manufactured locally. Drawing on their extensive orthopedic experience, Dr. Mbah and Dr. Wessel commended the technical staff for producing high-quality, patient-specific mobility solutions that restore independence and improve everyday living for individuals with physical disabilities.

The visit also provided an opportunity to exchange professional knowledge and explore practical strategies for expanding rehabilitation services through international collaboration. Discussions focused on strengthening clinical capacity, supporting innovation in rehabilitation care, and identifying areas where Impact Changing Outcomes and its medical partners can provide long-term technical and humanitarian support.

For Impact Changing Outcomes, this mission reflects the organization’s unwavering commitment to building healthier communities by connecting medical expertise with local healthcare institutions. By partnering with centers such as ARCH, ICO continues to promote sustainable solutions that improve access to specialized rehabilitation services, empower healthcare professionals, and create lasting opportunities for persons with disabilities to live fuller, more independent lives.
